This is the second core Search update of 2026. The rollout of the March core update completed on April 8 after 12 days.
What Google said
At the time of publication, Google has neither published an accompanying blog post nor named specific goals for the May core update. The only official description so far is the dashboard entry, which states: “The May 2026 core update has been released. Rollout may take up to 2 weeks.”
This is in line with how Google handled the March core update, which also launched without an accompanying blog post. For this update, the company used the description “a regular update aimed at better displaying more relevant and satisfying content to searchers across all types of websites.”
No new guidance came with today’s announcement.
Current update timeline
There are approximately six weeks between the completion of the March core update and today’s rollout. This is what the current timeline looks like.
This is the fourth confirmed Google rankings update for 2026 to appear in the Search Status Dashboard and the second Search Core update this year.
Why this is important
Some sites may experience ranking shifts over the next two weeks as the update rolls out. Don’t make content changes based on early ranking moves.
As Google recommends, wait at least a full week after a core update is completed before reviewing your Search Console data. Your baseline should be the weeks leading up to May 21st, compared to performance after the rollout is complete.
Core updates do not target specific types of content or policy violations. Pages may move up or down as Google updates its systems to keep up with changes on the web.
Looking ahead
No timeline for completion has been announced beyond the two-week estimate. We will update this article once the rollout is complete.
