After being dethroned by TikTok, Google is no longer the most popular domain in the world, according to the ranking of the web security company Cloudflare.
The list of the most popular domains is part of Cloudflare’s Year in Review report and shows the domains that have gained the most traffic from year to year.
Google.com – which also includes Maps, Translate and News – ended last year as the leader in the Cloudflare rankings.
TikTok was in 7th place at this point.
TikTok.com will now end 2021 with a leap towards the top spot ahead of Google, Facebook, Amazon and other leading domains worldwide.

Cloudflare describes TikTok’s path to becoming the most popular domain in 2021:
“On February 17th, 2021, TikTok took first place for one day. In March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it wasn’t until August 10, 2021 that TikTok took over the lead on most days. There were a few days when Google was number 1, but October and November were mostly TikTok days, including Thanksgiving (November 25th) and Black Friday (November 26th). “

Cloudflare’s report also includes lists of the most popular social media domains, the most popular ecommerce platforms, and the most popular video streaming sites.
Unsurprisingly, Amazon finished the year as the most popular ecommerce domain, followed by Taobao, Ebay, and Walmart.
The list of the most popular video streaming sites has been dominated by giants like Netflix, YouTube, and HBOMax. Interestingly, Twitch failed to break the top 10.
Put these rankings into perspective
Does that mean TikTok is now the biggest social media site?
No, there is still a long way to go before these heights are reached.
What this does is get TikTok.com more traffic than any other domain, according to Cloudflare.
That doesn’t mean TikTok has more users than Google or competing social media sites.
Insider Intelligence (formerly eMarketer) reports that TikTok has overtaken Snapchat and Twitter in global user numbers, but is way behind Facebook and Instagram.
In other words, TikTok is that third largest social media platform worldwide.
The number of TikTok users worldwide increased by 59.8% in 2020 and an additional 40.8% in 2021.
In addition, Insider Intelligence estimates that TikTok will see 15.1% growth in global users in 2022.
If this estimate is correct, TikTok will hold a 20% share of all social media users by the end of next year.
